Can you feel it?
The world is spinning at 1,000 miles per hour. Can you feel it?
I didn’t think so.
Whether we are aware of it or not, change is happening all around us, all the time. Only with distance can we look back and recognise how dramatically things have shifted, how far our world has turned.
It’s up to us whether things are changing for the better or not.
Being a culture-first leader can feel frustrating and success often needs to be measured in months and years instead of days and weeks. Though there are things we can do today to kick-start meaningful change.
Find out how in episode 46 of Culture Crush below, with Christopher Nguyen, founder of UX Playbook and leader of a community almost 70,000 strong. He’ll be talking wins, f*** ups, and how to make room for them both and create a culture of open dialogue.
Our work is always a balance between the tactical and the strategic, balancing our focus across immediate needs and long-term vision.
I find a comforting parallel in the title track from 2022’s Oscar-winning movie, Everything Everywhere All At Once, which speaks of ‘slow and sudden miracles’. Have a listen below, it’s a beauty.
If things are feeling slow and frustrating for you, you might be in the midst of a slow miracle, where the world is spinning though it can feel static.
The call of every leader is to intention. To continue to be culture-shapers despite the fact that we often don’t get to experience immediate results.
This is crucial because the reverse is also always true.
Cultural entropy is always at work and accelerates in organisations where leaders forget their calling to intention, to being a culture-shaper. This is the idea that systems and structures are always in a state of decay.
It’s why gardens get overgrown and cars turn to rust if we don’t intentionally look after them. The damage isn’t done overnight but rest assured, decay shows up for people who ignore the work.
So, you might be in a slow miracle.
Or you might be in a slow spiral toward decay.
You have the power to choose.
And on that note, in episode 44, Ashley Faus, Head of Lifestyle Marketing at Atlassian, explains how. Atlassian have managed to craft a remarkable set of actionable values that everyone can own and it’s unlocked dramatic growth for the business.
One final thing. On Friday next week, I’m hosting ‘Workplace Drama: What is it Costing You?’.
Drama is a clear signal of cultural entropy and in this free training, I’ll show you how to calculate how much it’s costing your organisation. Because when you know that, you can unlock resource to tackle the problem. Hope to see you there.
Be well,
